Get yourself a style signature item see: Ian McKellen's superb scarf selection , but don't stop going to the high street or checking out what's happening on the style scene. After 60, many men become preoccupied with trying to appear younger, whether that's through buying a sports car approved , getting a younger partner encouraged or dressing like you're a teenager again nope.
Just remember: dressing to appear younger doesn't mean dressing like a younger man, it means dressing well for a man your age. And GQ is here to help show you how to dress in your 60s and many years beyond.
With any luck you'll find yourself with far more free time on your hands after 60, combined with an enviable expendable income - of course you're going to want to have a good time, and, more importantly, you're going to want to dress for it in comfort.
Suits will have less importance as you head beyond your 60s, and instead you're going to want to invest in smart, multitasking separates. However, while it's time to get casual, that doesn't mean ditching your tailoring altogether.
On the contrary, a blazer and smart chinos will be your wingmen over the coming decades as they will look at home for pretty much any event you can attend. Let's face it, you may have to go for straight-cut trousers that can accommodate a fuller thigh now - and there's nothing wrong with that.
The last thing you want to be doing is squeezing into anything in your wardrobe. However never do you want to wear anything too baggy.
No-one wants to look like a crumpled mess, so keep in touch with your tailor - properly fitted clothing will shave years off you. This is also the decade to get smart about materials. In warmer months you will be less likely to throw on a pair of shorts, so invest in trousers in different fabrics that have you covered whatever the weather linen mixes for summer, lined wool and tweeds for winter. The same goes for jackets both half- and fully-lined , shirts and knitwear cotton mixes for summer, cashmere and Merino wool for winter.
Oh, and while it might be time to buzz your hair off if it's thinning no-one's ever been seduced by a man with a comb-over , that's all the more excuse to grow out your beard once again. However the most important thing is not to fall into a rut. Top priority is to keep updating your wardrobe as trends change - not by trying to pull off a pair of drop-crotch joggers, but by incorporating a seasonal colour into your armoury, for example. His fashion sense is as smooth as the slippery wetness of the melting polar ice caps.
Like the polar ice caps, we should be using all of our collective powers to immortalise him. His clothes can be seen as an extension of his personality: unfazed and laidback. Morgan Freeman should be the arbiter of style in your older years as he rarely seen without a suit and never over does it. We swear those glasses could add at least two style points to any outfit. But really, Bill Nighy does well because he stays the formal side of casual with lots of tailored pieces, therefore he always looks presentable.
I saw him on the streets of Soho recently and I can confirm, he looked very cool. His elegant suit was fitted perfectly and he wore it with a long trench coat. Side note: like Morgan Freeman, Bill Nighy proves we can forget the tie and embrace the post-office, post-tie formalwear. The suit, shirt, tie and V-neck jumper combination is an outfit that will crop up more than most in your sixties.
Ferry also recognises the power of formality, regularly sporting a three-piece suit, a double-breasted dinner jacket or a plain, cool tuxedo. If there is anything we can learn from the celebrated frontman it is when in doubt, go formal. We love that Ian McKellan loves a wacky scarf. It shows a sense of flair that should be celebrated post-fifties.
Not necessarily all at the same time, but just have a pinch of fun with it. The recently retired king of acting dresses in a versatile and sophisticated manner. However, get Daniel Day Lewis on the red carpet and he will look as sharp as ever in a black or dark blue tuxedo and his ruffled silver hair.
He expresses himself in his more casual moments and dresses to the occasion when it matters most. Unless you plan on spending every waking hour in the gym, it's time to accept the fact that you're probably going to get a little softer around the middle. With that in mind, look for casual clothes that are going to give your body that extra bit of structure. Try to wear more button-downs and polo shirts that, thanks to their seams, will both define your shoulders and make your arms look bigger go for polos with tighter arm holes and roll up shirt sleeves to bulk up your biceps.
If you want to wear a T-shirt, look for ones with baseball-style raglan sleeves a seam that runs from under the arm to the collar that will broaden your chest and back. Black can be a harsh colour on paler, more mature skin. Instead go for staples in warmer neutrals like soft grey, navy blue, brown and camel. Rather than rocking big, bold prints, keep the majority of your outfit sleek and simple, then add interest with small pops of pattern a floral tie, a striped silk scarf or spotted socks, for example.
Unless you have a washboard stomach, it's best to keep your casual shirts, T-shirts and polos untucked. Just make sure you get the right fits to do this with: invest in an arsenal of slim fit polos and trim button-down Oxford with a curved hem that hits midway down your fly. It's an unfortunate fact of being a man that you may find you have less and less hair after you turn If baldness is kicking in, don't go the combover route - take control and shave it all off.
We know it's a big step, but if you're scared to do it just remember there's evidence to suggest that bald men are seen as far more masculine than their follicularly fortunate counterparts.
Wear a black jacket, trousers and black polo neck offset with a hint of colour — a grey, blue, red or white jacket pocket handkerchief. Loafers and monk-straps.
Relax your footwear and make sure to look out for shoes that you can slip into and go: single or double monk-straps should be your go-to formal footwear, and, when it comes to casual attire, try deck shoes in summer and Chelsea boots in winter.
A hat. Or is it? It can be an incredibly stylish accessory. Obviously, embrace the bald when it happens and a hat is important to stop your head getting burnt if your hair is thinner, but you might as well make it look elegant at the same time, right? A quality wallet. You're going to spend the years after you're 60 spending all that money you've accumulated from working hard your whole life. As you'll be whipping out your wallet a lot, upgrade that old one you've been carrying around for years into something a little more impressive.
Our tip is to go for a bigger one for that can accommodate cards and cash for everyday use, and a co-ordinating slim card holder for nights out that won't ruin the line of your blazer. A light scarf. A light scarf is the perfect accoutrement to a more bohemian edge and, not to be too crude, but it does help cover up wrinkles too. As you get older the skin south of your face might get a little looser. Screw the surgeon, that's nothing a well-fitted dark rollneck can't fix - plus you'll give off that cool Michael Caine vibe whenever you wear it.
Slip them under your blazers and suits or even under a crew neck knit for extra insulation. Blazers in every colour.
As we've mentioned already, the key to dressing in your downtime post is to look for items with structure - and fewer items are more suited to this than a blazer. Now only will the shoulder pads made you look broader and stand straighter, but a blazer can also be worn just as easily with your jeans at the bar with your drinking buddies as it can be at at brunch with your partner. Just make sure you look for blazers, not suit jackets these will look far too formal , and go for comfortable weekend-ready materials like wool, cashmere, cotton or linen.
And unless you want to look like your dad, try to avoid corduroy. When it comes to winter top layers, go for ones in wool or cashmere that hit your knees and below.
Not only are these an incredibly versatile and comfortable style not to mention one that keeps the wind fully at bay , but they'll elongate your body and more importantly, they look superbly sophisticated. Grey hair shampoo. Chances are you'll be at salt-and-pepper stages towards the end of this decade. While you might initially feel that covering it will make you look and feel younger, you'll realise that after the first few colouring sessions, it's better far easier to embrace your grey hair - plus it looks damn good on you.
First step: buy a specialist grey shampoo to keep your newly silver hair shining bright. Now read:. How to dress your age in your 20s. How to dress your age in your 30s.
